Gay marriage: Obama’s political gamble

From New York Times front page today (link):

Most Americans suspect that President Obama was motivated by politics, not policy, when he declared his support for same-sex marriage, according to a poll released on Monday, suggesting that the unplanned way it was announced shaped public attitudes.

There may have been awkwardness in the posture or timing of the President’s remarks, but I find it hard to believe they were politically motivated.  Politically, this is not a good time for this President to take a divisive stand.
